A Beacon of Light in the Community

What does it mean to “Love our neighbours as ourselves”? How do we want to be remembered as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ?  We answered these questions and more, as we volunteered our time over two Saturdays in 2025, to work with the beneficiaries of the Outreach and Social Concerns (OSC) ministry. Building on the momentum from 2024, we executed, with thanks to God’s provision of fine weather, an outing to the Rainforest Wild Asia and a celebration commemorating Singapore’s 60th birthday. We were joined, hand in hand, with the students from ACS (International)’s Interact club in both events, bringing joy to the beneficiaries who reside in our neighbouring community at Commonwealth Crescent.

The first event for the year was the outing in April, to the Rainforest Wild Asia where volunteers engaged with the beneficiaries through the numerous games and activities enroute to the venue.

Together, we visited the newly-opened attraction in the Mandai Wildlife Reserves, taking in the sights, sounds and unique experiences of being in a real rainforest. Many bonds were formed with the beneficiaries, taking our relationships to a further level, beyond that fostered during the usual monthly house visits that the OSC undertakes, with the help of our befrienders.

In early August, we celebrated Singapore’s 60th birthday with our beneficiaries, by holding an outreach event in the school canteen.

It was a demonstration of talents intertwined with the spirit of servanthood, as the volunteers engaged them actively through song, dance and activities leaving the audience in awe of the talent that was on display. Truly difficult to find an event as engaging as this in the neighbourhood I would say!

As we wrap up the year, the OSC will continue to press on with our goal of helping the needy in our community, being the beacon of light. We will be having our Bursary presentation and “Bless the Family” Christmas event in December, where we continue to demonstrate our acts of servitude towards the needy. If you would like to be a part of our events, or are interested to volunteer as a befriender, please contact Bruce Lim. (bruce@hvmc.sg).
