Celebrating Women at Work

This year’s WSCS (Women’s Society of Christian Service) Sunday held on 11 May, was a heartfelt celebration of “women at work”. The occasion, combined with Mother’s Day, offered a special opportunity to honour the calling and contributions of women across generations - both homemakers and those in the workplace.

Our HVMC WSCS President, Mrs Eunice Yeo, delivered an inspiring sermon, from Matthew 13:33, on the quiet yet transformative influence of women as “leaven” in the kingdom of heaven. Through the stories of Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba and Mary - the women in Christ’s genealogy - Eunice reminded the congregation that God uses ordinary women of faith to accomplish extraordinary purposes. Their courage, sacrifice and obedience were not defined by societal status or abilities, but by their willingness to act in faith.

The sermon also drew parallels to women of faith across history, such as Susanna Wesley and Sophia Blackmore, and even among HVMC’s own: a single mother who once gave her travel fund during COVID to bless the church and a woman who gave up her smartphone so others could attend online worship. A homeless young woman who chose to accept Christ when she was housed and educated by a kind Christian, is now ready to serve the Lord in the ministry of the unloved and rejected. These modern testimonies highlight that “kingdom work” is often done through quiet resilience and love.

This spirit of love and service was deeply felt through the WSCS team’s efforts to honour mothers and all women in the church. Manda Tay, the VP of HVMC WSCS, led a team that thoughtfully prepared and served breakfast before service. The team also distributed meaningful door gifts, comprising a hand-coloured encouragement card and a blank one for recipients to colour and gift to others - sowing seeds of connection and sisterhood. A special devotion booklet featuring testimonies from Methodist women across Singapore was also made available, courtesy of TRAC WSCS, with contributions from five women from our church.

A second offering was collected to support organisations reaching out to the poor and needy, such as the MWS Girls’ Residence, Wicare Support Group, Aoxiang Counselling Service and MWS Family Development Programme, among others. This aligns with the WSCS’ ongoing mission to be a ministry by women, for women in need.

As the WSCS continues to grow, let us continue to pray for more women in the church to join us, to be excited about serving alongside one another, to carry the mark of unity and love as they walk in Christ’s calling and to serve to the end.
