Growing Up is Hard to Do

Navigating Early Adulthood

As a young adult, I would say that this stage of life is one of many transitions. We are starting or graduating from tertiary studies, entering the workforce or navigating new family dynamics, relationships and life circumstances. We are constantly finding our place in the world and as Christians, some may find it increasingly difficult to live out our faith in it. The theme of this inaugural Young Adults Retreat held at Lasalle House in Marine Parade, from 27-29 July, was very appropriate.

Samantha Seow :-
“What really caught my interest to attend this Young Adults Retreat was the theme of the retreat: How to live as Christians in a non-Christian world. With so many outside voices coming at us, it’s difficult to discern which one is God’s voice. Bonding with a group of like-minded young adults was refreshing.”

Pastor Khoo Kay Huat from Living Waters Methodist Church helped us reflect on how God is already working in our lives. We were reminded that though we may feel lost or broken, God restores us by His grace, and still uses each of us for His kingdom purposes.

Our Pastor-in-charge, Ps Jeremy Ong also shared about loving in God’s love – by bearing witness to His love by our actions and forging authentic Christian fellowship through mutual submission to one another.

Eliot Pan :-
“The retreat was a valuable opportunity to set aside worldly stresses and focus on God. The speakers’ messages were well-tailored to young adults and the common challenges we may face in this world, setting the stage for insightful discussions and sharing. It was extremely heartening watching our little community grow over the course of the retreat. I am truly excited to see God continuing to work in our church!”

Elizabeth Lum :-
“Through small group discussions, God reminded me that I am not alone, for I have Him and this community to journey with. I found both comfort and conviction.
I attended the retreat expecting an outward-facing interpretation of the theme, but as the sessions unfolded, I realised the starting point is inward. We must first confront and process our own difficult emotions and allow God to reframe our paradigms. Only then can we build a strong foundation to live out our faith, share Christ’s love, and invite others into that same love.”

Aside from learning, fellowship was an integral part of the retreat where we bonded over coffee and bubble tea runs, meals and the more athletic of us even went for a morning run together.

Mitchell Chew :-
“As I had just returned to Singapore after my studies overseas, the retreat provided me with the time and space for prolonged reflection on my connection with God and how it can continue to grow. Learning how Bible characters like Esther and Peter had chances to renew themselves inspired me to see every day as an opportunity to renew my covenant with God.
I met both familiar and new faces, bonding over Jeopardy games and late-night prata. I know I can share my struggles with these friends, who will continue to be by my side. This retreat has truly been invaluable in helping me find my place with God and with the young adult community at HVMC.”

Shane Tan :-
"I had fun interacting with other young adults. God spoke to me through both Ps Kay Huat and Ps Jeremy - it was amazing and humbling. If there is another retreat, I will definitely be there!"
