Journey Through the Bible

On 2 March 2023, 15 individuals from HVMC embarked on a journey that would change their spiritual lives forever.

The 2023 edition of DISCIPLE 1 was a 34-week discipleship course conducted by HVMC and led by Ps Loretta Lim. The course took participants through both the Old and New Testaments, beginning from the creation story in Genesis and culminating in the victorious return of Christ as prophesied in the book of Revelation.

Each session usually began with a 15-minute video summarising the lesson content, followed by a vibrant discussion of the video content as well as the scriptures for that week. "Encounter the Word" would follow, where participants were given a short passage of scripture to analyse and meditate on. Finally, they would engage in a discussion on the "Marks of Discipleship" and take turns sharing their prayer requests.

Halfway through the course, participants were given opportunities to serve by leading and facilitating the sessions. To spice things up, for some sessions, the leader would summarise the discussion content with a mnemonic. Donnell used the 5Fs: “Faith For Freedom From Flesh (Forever)”, while Irene’s was the double SOS: “Sacrifice Of Saviour Saves Our Souls”.

Studying the Bible was not the only activity the participants did together. On 25 October 2023, some of  them were involved in a service project in conjunction with Yew Tee Nursing Home. They brought snacks and drinks to the Home and engaged in friendly conversation with the residents. Some even had the opportunity of sharing the gospel.

The last two sessions of the course were conducted at Changi Cove Hotel from 17 to 18 November 2023 and the participants marked the end of the 34-week long course by serving Holy Communion to one another.

Participants share their reflections on the Course:-

“Some of us knew each other only by sight during Sunday service, but after 34 weeks, we have grown in spirit, bonded with one another like an expanded Life Group through open discussion and sharing, concern and prayers for one another.”

– Choong Yin

“The sense of community and shared growth in my discipleship group was invaluable. I am just starting to learn more about Jesus and the Bible but the group facilitators were very knowledgeable, and I learnt much from them. We supported each other and celebrated our discoveries.”

– Donnell

“Complementing the material and organisation of the course, was the wonderful group of people that journeyed with me for 34 weeks. If it were not for the willingness and earnestness of everyone, the content would not have been as relatable nor as meaningful. It was the camaraderie, rooted in the love of and from God, that has been a serendipitous blessing.”
